Electroplating is an electrochemical surface finishing process that deposits a thin layer of metal—such as nickel, chrome, zinc, gold, or silver—onto the surface of a metal workpiece. By passing an electrical current through an electrolyte bath, metal ions migrate and form a dense, uniform protective coating that adheres strongly to the base material.

Unlike standard organic coatings, electroplating creates a durable metallic finish that significantly improves wear resistance, friction control, and environmental protection while retaining precise dimensional control.

  1. The electroplating process will add a micron-scale metal deposition layer to the surface of the part (such as chrome plating, nickel plating, or gold plating). For precision mating holes, threads, or high-precision mating surfaces, during the design stage, very small dimensional tolerances must be reserved to avoid assembly interference caused by the thickening of the plating layer.
  2. During electroplating, sharp edges and external corners are prone to accumulate electric charges (tip discharge), resulting in overly thick coatings or even nodules; while in deep holes, internal corners, and blind holes, the current density is relatively low, and the coating may be too thin or unable to be plated. In design, rounded corners/angled corners should be adopted; if necessary, auxiliary anodes should be added.
  3. The metal interface formed by the electroplating layer has extremely high hardness and protective properties, which can significantly enhance the corrosion resistance, wear resistance and electrical conductivity of the parts. However, if subsequent welding or adhesive bonding is required, the impact of specific plating layers (such as chrome plating) on adhesion needs to be evaluated in advance.
