What's Alodine?

Alodine (also known as chem film or chromate conversion coating) is a chemical surface treatment specifically designed for aluminum and its alloys. Rather than depositing a separate material layer like plating, Alodine triggers a chemical reaction that converts the aluminum surface into a thin, protective film.

• Corrosion Resistance: It provides an excellent defensive barrier against atmospheric oxidation and moisture, significantly extending the lifespan of precision parts.
• Paint Adhesion: The microscopic structure of the converted film serves as an ideal, chemically active primer layer, dramatically improving the bonding of subsequent paints, powder coatings, or adhesives.
• Electrical Conductivity: Unlike anodizing—which creates a highly non-conductive oxide layer—Alodine maintains low electrical resistance. This makes it the go-to finish for electronic enclosures requiring electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and grounding.
• Dimensional Stability: Because the film is microscopic (typically less than 1 micron), it yields virtually zero dimensional change, making it perfect for strict-tolerance precision machined components.

It is widely specified under the MIL-DTL-5541 standard across aerospace, military, and electronics manufacturing.
